So for those of you that don’t know, I am super passionate about suicide awareness and mental health education. I walked in on my dad attempting suicide my junior year of high school. He has since gotten help, and him and my mom are very involved in their local nonprofit mental health organization. They teach classes, lead support groups, and have even spoken about their journey at some events. I, myself, have taught mental health and mindfulness classes and been involved with the same organization.
Earlier this week, on September 10th, was World Suicide Prevention Day. As if this day wasn’t already close to my heart, on that day my all time FAVORITE band, For King & Country, posted a truly touching Facebook post and music video in support of the special day. God Only Knows is a new song of theirs that is one of the most relatable songs I’ve heard in a while, and is definitely a song that probably means something to every single one of you.
This song talks about feeling alone, misunderstood, judged, and so much more. Personally, I have felt this way too many times in my life. I’ve had some tragic events occur in my life that have given me these feelings, such as my dad’s suicide attempt, the death of my best friend, and so much more. More than that, though, I’ve felt those things before without any reason at all.
That being said, what I liked about God Only Knows is that even though I can’t say I’m the only one to ever feel negative things, I do have a unique story. Everybody has a unique story. And while it’s so easy to walk around throwing a pity party saying, “Nobody gets me. I’ve been through so much. Etc….”, SOMEBODY DOES GET US. That somebody gets us better than we even get ourselves. And because God is the One that knows what we’ve been through and are going through, we can rest knowing that we can trust the One who knows everything He needs to know about us.
This song has become a song I heavily rely on when I feel alone or misunderstood (or become queen of the pity party). It is so comforting to know that “God only knows where to find you. God only knows how to break through. God only knows the real you. There’s a kind of love that God only knows”. This very much goes hand in hand with my previous post about relying on God and letting Him take control. This means that we NEVER have to hide (not that you can really hide from God anyways), and we NEVER have to feel alone or like nobody gets us. We are so loved and so understood and so cared for by the One whose knowing is the only knowing that matters.
God Only Knows
By: For King & Country
Wide awake while the world is sound asleepin’
Too afraid of what might show up while you’re dreamin’
Nobody, nobody, nobody sees you
Nobody, nobody, nobody would believe you
Every day you try to pick up all the pieces
All the memories, they somehow never leave you
Nobody, nobody, nobody sees you
Nobody, nobody, nobody would believe you
God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows how it’s killing you
But there’s a kind of love that God only knows
God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows the real you
There’s a kind of love that God only knows
There’s a kind of love that
There’s a kind of love
You keep a cover over every single secret
So afraid if someone saw them they would leave
But somebody, somebody, somebody sees you
Somebody, somebody will never leave you
God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows how it’s killing you
But there’s a kind of love that God only knows
God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows the real you
There’s a kind of love that God only knows
There’s a kind of love that
There’s a kind of love
There’s a kind of love that
There’s a kind of love
For the lonely, for the ashamed
The misunderstood, and the ones to blame
What if we could start over
We could start over
We could start over
Oh for the lonely, for the ashamed
The misunderstood, and the ones to blame
What if we could start over
We could start over
We could start over
‘Cause there’s a kind of love that God only knows
God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows the real you
But there’s a kind of love that God only knows
God only knows what you’ve been through
God only knows what they say about you
God only knows the real you
There’s a kind of love that God only knows
There’s a kind of love that
There’s a kind of love
There’s a kind of love that
There’s a kind of love
God only knows where to find you
God only knows how to break through
God only knows the real you
There’s a kind of love that God only knows
